UNDERSTAND NAVIGATION IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS

Start with the system architecture, then test position sources, follow a waypoint route, and finally break navigation sources to see reversion.

01

Understand the System

See GPS, IRU, VOR, DME, FMS, database, displays and autopilot guidance together.

02

Find the Aircraft Position

Switch GPS, IRU, VOR and DME sources on/off and inspect their information.

03

Follow a Route

Load waypoints, create cross-track error, engage LNAV and compare fly-by / fly-over behavior.

04

Break the Navigation

Fail GPS, add IRU drift, remove VOR/DME updates and observe navigation reversion.

Recommended: System Map → GPS/IRU Position Sources → Load Demo Flight → Create XTK Error → Fail GPS.

HOW NAVIGATION WORKS

Multiple navigation sources feed the FMS. The FMS compares aircraft position with the programmed route and provides guidance.

POSITION SOURCES LAB

Move the aircraft and switch navigation sources. Watch GPS position, IRU drift, VOR radial and DME distances update.

Core idea: GPS gives an external position, IRU provides continuous inertial navigation, VOR gives radial/bearing information, and DME gives range.

FMS / RNAV ROUTE LAB

Load a route, create cross-track error, fly manually or engage LNAV. The FMS continuously compares actual position with the active route leg.

Learning point: exact reversion logic is aircraft-specific. This simulator demonstrates the concept of source loss, position degradation and alternate-source use.
