Beginner Guides

New to aviation or engineering? This page collects our entry-level guides — articles written specifically for readers with no technical background. No jargon without a definition, no assumed knowledge, no shortcuts.

How to use this page

Work top to bottom. Each guide builds on the previous one, and every unfamiliar term links to our Aircraft Glossary or Engineering Dictionary.

Recommended starting order

  1. How an aircraft actually flies — lift, weight, thrust and drag, explained without equations.
  2. The main parts of an aircraft — fuselage, wings, empennage, landing gear and what each one does.
  3. How a jet engine works — suck, squeeze, bang, blow: the four steps every turbine follows.
  4. Electricity basics for makers — voltage, current and resistance using the water-pipe analogy.
  5. Reading a simple circuit diagram — the symbols that appear in almost every schematic.
  6. Hand tools every beginner should know — what they are called, what they are for, and how not to misuse them.

As new beginner articles are published they are added to this list, so bookmark this page.
